I wonder if this story puts to bed all those stories about drivers wanting to keep restrictions for the good of the people. Surely Bolton have shown us that it's for the good of the plate premium.

Up here in Edinburgh plate values have now reached the £25000 mark and upwards and on top of that a cab will cost £10000 at least.On the subject of night buses if they are properly run and cheap .....£1-£2 per head to get home they WILL succeed in taking away taxi business.We have night buses on busy Fri/Sat nights operating up to a 10 minute frequency on some routes and they take a lot of business with some buses operating with a standing load.Very disheartening to see especially as the company is privately owned by the council (97% shareholding). :cry:

Mr Oakes also defended the premiums for taxi plates on the basis that this rewarded drivers for good service and also provided an incentive to give a service of a high standard. He said: "If people out there have done good work and built their business up, then something drastic happens and they cannot work any more, why shouldn't they get something back? If someone pays £10,000 for a cab and plate, they will have to work at it to get their money back and will give a better service."

I wonder how much Mr Oakes paid for his plate, what's the betting it cost him nothing? But he now wants to use it as an insurance policy.

If people build up a good business? :shock: What about the journeymen who do most of the business building? What do they get back?

But at least if someone pays £10,000 for a plate, according to Oakes, the customers will get a better service. Well in that case if plates were £100,000 they would get even a better one. :?
