Drug charge driver told to keep licence

A TAXI driver allegedly caught with GBP40,000 of cocaine in his car has been allowed to keep his licence . . . for now.

Mark Hutchison, 29, was arrested along with another man after police allegedly found 1kg of the drug in his private hire vehicle.

His licence was temporarily suspended on October 3, after police alerted council officers to an offence alleged to have taken place on September 27.

But yesterday, after hearing a representation from Mr Hutchison, councillors decided to recall the suspension order.

This allows Mr Hutchison to continue driving while he awaits a preliminary court appearance over the charge next July.

Police had argued that Mr Hutchison's continued private hire car driving "would be likely to cause a serious threat to public safety".

Well they should have asked the court to make it a condition of bail that he didn't drive his licensed vehicle.
