Get smart order drives cabbies around bend

TAXI drivers have been driven round the bend after being ordered to wear top gear behind the wheel. Cabbies in the Blaenau Gwent area are revolting after council bosses demanded they start dressing smartly or risk having their licence taken away.

A petition from furious drivers went before the council last week but was rejected. Now they are breaking the rules, insisting they have the right to wear comfy tracksuit bottoms or shorts when ferrying passengers around town.

The petition, dismissed by Blaenau Gwent’s Licensing Committee, contained 84 signatures from licensed cabbies.

It said: “The wearing of tracksuit bottoms, tops, rugby shirts and football shirts – 90 per cent of taxi drivers wear this clothing – is comfortable for the long hours they are sat in the cars.”

The cabbies’ petition also called for a ban on logos or pictures on T-shirts – “as long as they aren’t offensive” – to be overturned. It said: “If there are any complaints about the appearance of any driver, surely they should be addressed individually?”.

But councillors insist drivers need to start dressing smartly – strictly shirt and trousers – or lose their livelihood.

Amy Rees, a 26-year-old cabbie front Nantyglo, said: “None of us are very happy with the dress code. The thing is, we were always sensibly dressed anyway. But they just think they own us, to be honest.

“The only thing that matters is whether you’ve got a badge on your side. You can’t drive around all day in your good clothes, you won’t be comfortable.

“We put a petition in, but they don’t take a blind bit of notice of what we say. As long as they’re in their nice warm offices they don’t give a damn about anything at all. “Drivers aren’t dressing any differently. They’re just flouting it.”

She was joined by Alan Oldham, 62, of Ebbw Vale, who said the council was “treating taxi drivers as if we were children”. He said: “Most drivers are sensible in the way they dress. Quite a lot of my work is taking people on holiday. They don’t want people to dress in a suit and tie to take them on holiday.

“If you’re a chauffeur, then yes, you’d expect to wear a big cap and so on but not in normal cars. “Taxi drivers are sensible people. If they got a bad reaction from their customers, they’d soon change or they’d lose them.”

But the cabbies’ complaints were dismissed by Derek Morris, chairman of the Licensing Committee. “I don’t think they’re excessive,” he said. “In fact, we had the taxi drivers in to meet us. We didn’t just do this willy-nilly.

“We had one or two complaints from people. I’ve always known that the vast majority of taxi drivers have been good, responsible people.

“But you always get the odd one or two not keeping up with the rules and regulations and not presenting themselves as they should. I don’t think we’ve done anything excessive. You’ve got to be dressed reasonably tidy.”

90% are wearing tracksuits or football/rugby shirts?
