Taxi driver’s speeding ticket dodge backfires

AN OLDHAM taxi driver paid another man to accept speeding fines so he could dodge points on his licence, a court heard. Mahmood Khokhar, 26, ran up two speeding tickets after his private hire Toyota Avensis was caught by automatic cameras.

He returned the tickets claiming the driver was another man, giving his name and address. Both tickets were sent to the third party. But it later emerged Khokhar had paid the man £100 to accept the fines so his own licence would not be endorsed.

Khokhar, of Fern Street, Coppice, was ordered to do 240 hours unpaid work after admitting perverting the course of justice. Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester, heard how Khokhar did shifts as a taxi driver in the car owned by his father, Mohammed, alongside studies for a business technology degree.

Sentencing Khokhar, Judge Peter Lakin said: "You must appreciate that lying to the police about road traffic offences to avoid points is very serious. "You have come very close indeed to going to prison."

Why wasn't he jailed? Vincent Pericard the Stoke footballer was jailed for the same offence.
