TAXI DRIVER KIDNAPPER JAILED
A man who abducted a taxi driver and took her through three counties has been jailed for 10 years.
Arius Dikis (27) beat the 60-year-old female taxi driver round the head with a bottle and bundled her in to the back of her taxi. He then drove her to Nottingham before stealing her takings, a court heard.
Latvian Dikis, of Grantley Street, Grantham got into Dorothy Gant's taxi in Grantham Market Place and asked her to drive to Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.
When they got there, Dikis got out of the cab and dropped his wallet, when Mrs Gant got out to help him he shoved her on to the back seat and began beating her around the head with a bottle. He then took her keys and mobile phone and drove the taxi to Nottingham where he abandoned her.
The court heard that semi-retired Mrs Gant is diabetic and her injuries caused her serious medical problems. She suffered permanent eye damage which has forced her to give up driving and she now walks with a stick.
Michael Rudd, in mitigation, told the court that Dikis had no memory of the night after drinking heavily and taking anti-depressants, but had handed himself in to the police station after seeing a newspaper report of the incident.
Judge Michael Heath sentenced Dikis to 10 years after he admitted offences of robbery, kidnap and wounding with intent.
