Is the article trying to say that he drove more or less non-stop for 14 days without sleep? Find that difficult to believe. Or is it just saying that he drove more days than allowed by the taco?

I think that once the driver is on european soil he has to adhere to european driving laws. Personally if any foreign lorry does not comply with european specifications then it should not be driven on european roads. The trailer should be dropped at the point of entry and forwarded by a compliant vehicle.

I think he would have had an hour's sleep here and there whilst resting.

As opposed to us who have an hours sleep here and there when working.
