One or two mistakes in this article but I'm sure they stand out like a sore thumb. Birmingham Evening Mail December 8, 2007, Saturday Leyland set for new drive info taxi ranks A new taxi is being developed by British Ley-land In liaison with Home Office experts to replace the familiar "sit-up-and-beg" cab. And Birmingham councillors are being recommended to defer any deci-gpounds an on an approach to allow Ford Granadas to be used as hackney carriages until the new Leyland taxi makes its debitt. But a British Leyland spokesman said today that he had "no idea" the new vehicle - codenamed the FX 5 - would be pro duced. "One tilts to plan for the next 10-20 years. It has to be practld, economic and. serviceable. The FX 4 taxi we produce today has a very line-record," he Added. City Council represent tatives, at the invitation of Bristol Street Motors, recently inspected a Ford Granda saloon adapted for the taxi trade The city's present policy is to allow only the metropolitan FX 4 type taxis to be used as cabsplaying for hire. Birmingham's private hire operators are Strongly opposed to replacing (the FX 4 With a saloon can like the Granada. They say it would result in confusion between taxis and private hire cars and they fear it will open the way for unlicensed saloon cars to ply for hire again. ____________________ |

They say it would result in confusion between taxis and private hire cars and they fear it will open the way for unlicensed saloon cars to ply for hire again. ____________________ I think it was probably meant to read, "Birmingham hackney carriage operators" and not private hire "operators". However, if the comment is correct then I ask the question, what the hell has it got to do with private hire operators what type of vehicles are licensed as hackney carriages? The quote strongly opposed to replacing the FX4 with a saloon "can" might lead us to beleive that there is more to this story than meets the eye? lol I don't know if anyone has seen this proposed new specialised vehicle but if it has a partition of some sort and the price is right then I'm sure it will be popular with some people?
