Man hit wife in front of his son

Redditch Advertiser

Neighbours heard screaming shortly before a man attacked his wife in the street in front of their five-year-old son.

They saw Allan Ireton hit his 37-year-old wife in the face and knock her down, Worcester Crown Court heard.

Officers alerted to the scene were horrified to see Amanda Ireton's swollen face and she was covered in mud, said Gareth Walters, prosecuting.

Their child was in a distressed state, hiding behind his mother.

Ireton, aged 42, of Fordbridge Close, Redditch, Headless Cross, struggled with police but he was overpowered by three officers. He pleaded guilty to assault actual bodily harm and resisting arrest.

Judge Alistair McCreath told Ireton that his wife was entitled to expect better behaviour from him in front of their child.

"You caused nasty injuries and richly deserve to go to prison,"" the judge added.

But he gave the defendant a chance by sentencing him to nine months jail, suspended for two years, on condition he attends a domestic abuse programme run by the probation service.

The incident happened on August 9 in the early hours of the morning when an argument flared up.

Ireton had a previous conviction for affray when he refused to pay a taxi fare, smashed the cab window with his head and punched the driver.

Tim Green, defending, said the couple were now estranged and their relationship was over.

But Mrs Ireton needed the landscaper in the community, not in prison, so that he could work and provide financial support.

Ireton recognised he had a temper problem and had been paying for treatment from a psychotherapist.

Mr Green said: "He lashed out and he's sorry. He is benefitting from treatment and his wife has forgiven him."

Chances of him keeping clean for two years, less than 0%.

So he will get his 9 months holiday delayed for a while.
