Ex-Leeds United director wins taxi contract

A minicab firm run by former Leeds United director David Richmond has won a contract to operate private hire vehicles to and from Leeds Bradford Airport.

Mr Richmond's Arrow private hire firm is replacing the Hackney carriage cars which were provided by three firms who formed the Airport Taxi Association.

The five-year deal means Horsforth-based Arrow cabs will be the only ones allowed to drop passengers off outside the airport terminal because of tightened security. Arrow is also the sole provider of cabs from a rank at the airport.

Other taxi firms will have to drop passengers at the nearby short-stay car park. Mr Richmond has invested more than £1.5m in the new operation and by March expects to have a fleet of more than 350 taxis.

Mr Richmond, son of former Bradford City chairman Geoffrey, said he believed he had won the tender because he was prepared to build and staff an office running 24-hours a day.

A spokeswoman for the airport said Arrow had demonstrated commitment to customer service, as well as competitive fares.

ON NEW YEARS DAY THE AIRPORT HAD TO RING THE HACKNEY MOB TO TAKE PEOPLE HOME WHO HAD BEEN WAITING 2 HOURS IN FREEZING COLD WEATHER, SO FOLKS, LETS SEE HOW LONG MR. RICHMOND CAN HANG ON TO HIS "CONTRACT WITH LBIA"
AFTER 33 YEARS OF THE HACKNEY TRADE RANKING AT THE AIRPORT, THE AIRPORT AUTHORITIES HAVE GONE FOR THE BIGGEST CHEQUE WITH NO REGARD TO CUSTOMER SERVICE. [/b]

Greed will always be the ruination of this trade, when I worked in Newport Gwent, Dragon taxis who have a rank at the front of the train station often ring other companies to help out. They have also hailed hackneys from a nearby road to come in and pick up passengers, as well as having their own P.H coming on and picking up from the rank like a Hack would.

If companies and hacks refused, it would strengthen their own argument that it should be opened up to all.

And I bet they duly went out to pick the punters up. :?

Now what I would have done is to tell the lads to go nowhere near the airport.

I note the acronym for Leeds/Bradford is LBIA.

Why not Leeds And Bradford International Airport?

He wont keep the contract for long, LBA is the highest commercial airport in the country, adverse weather conditions such as fog and high winds affect it on a regular basis, PH drivers won't sit there for 3-4 hours on the hope of a fare if the weather is bad. He's taking 25% of the quoted fare for the costs of running this contract, for example, fare from LBA to Leeds city centre is £16, driver gets just £12, all on dockets, the drivers will soon become bored of that won't they?? If he can't supply the cars for the contract on the Winter timetable, what chance does he have on the Summer schedule; then he should step aside and let the Hackneys continue from where they left off, providing the safe and comfortable service they always have for the last 30 years
