Taxi driver held up in gun terror

POLICE are investigating after a taxi driver was held at gunpoint and
forced to hand over his car keys in West Lancashire.

The robbery happened last Tuesday after the Southport-based Central
Cabs driver picked up two men at the Embassy Restaurant in Nevill Street,
Southport, just after 4pm.

The two young men, who were described as slim and speaking with
Lancashire accents, asked to be taken to Maghull, said the driver.

They directed him to Broad Lane in Downholland Cross, between Aughton
and Lydiate, via Greens Lane before asking him to pull onto an off-road
track, which they said was the entry to a farmhouse belonging to a
relative.

The driver said one of the man then produced a handgun and cocked it in
front of his face before demanding the car.

The driver did not wish to be named but his boss, Central Cabs owner
Alan Campbell, said: “They didn’t demand his money, they were clearly
intent on just getting the car. It was traumatic, he said he can’t work at
the moment.”

Police scrambled the force helicopter but were unable to find the car, a
£15,000 2006 Mondeo TDI.

Anyone with information is asked to ring Ormskirk CID on 01695-566442.
