January 21, 2008 Monday A taxi rank would not 'correspond' with Nailsworth, say parish councillors Stroud News And Journal A TAXI rank is not wanted in Nailsworth because it does not 'correspond' with the way of life in the town, say councillors. Following a recent meeting between taxi drivers and Stroud District Council, Nailsworth was asked whether it supported the idea of a rank at the bus station in Market Square. But at Nailsworth Town Council, members objected to the suggestion, saying there was no need for such a facility. "My understanding is that this is somewhere a taxi waits for business. That doesn't correspond with the way of life here at all," said Cllr Bill Affleck. Cllr John Nicholson claimed rows of vehicles would have a negative impact on the town. "They just sit there in Stroud," he said. "I don't know how the town supports so many taxis, I wouldn't have thought there would be anything like that demand." Cllr Brian Jayes said the fact that there is no longer unlimited parking in Nailsworth may be one reason behind the request by taxi drivers. "The timing of this letter may be connected," he said. Parish chairman and town mayor Norman Kay said there was no evidence of a need for a taxi rank. "We are also concerned about the loss of parking spaces," he said. "But we recognise that there are some bus users who would want a taxi, so we would consider providing the numbers of local companies." Councillors agreed that a board displaying the telephone numbers of taxi firms at the bus station would be helpful . "We would ask the district council if they could provide a list of numbers and whether it would consider installing a telephone for taxi needs," said Cllr Kay. Speaking after the meeting John Gardiner, chairman of Stroud Taxi Association, said he was disappointed by the town council's response. "Nailsworth is quite a progressive town and we believe there is a need for a taxi rank there," he said. "Several people have asked why there isn't one and drivers said if there was one they would use it. "It would be an integral part of the town. "Until you really try something you can't say for definite it won't work." * Is there a need for a taxi rank in Nailsworth or would it not 'correspond' with the way of life in the town? Whatever next? they'll be wanting to put the railway through there. Never heard of Nailsford. Is it anywhere near Cranford, or Candleford?

"I don't know how the town supports so many taxis, I wouldn't have thought there would be anything like that demand." Now we understand why there are a lack of Taxi ranks in this country. No wonder the courts deemed lack of Taxi rank provision is not a valid reason for refusing a hackney carriage license under section 16. I think they must have had Nailsford Town councillors in mind when they made that ruling. Regards JD |

I was always under the impression that if the council licenced taxis they must provide a rank
