Paddick to prioritise black cabs Brian Paddick took early retirement from the force in May The Liberal Democrat mayoral candidate Brian Paddick is putting London's "hallmark" black cabs at the heart of his transport policies. In a ten-point plan being revealed on Tuesday he will pledge to give licensed black cab drivers a seat on the board of Transport for London (TfL). He also wants a consultation on whether pedicabs should be licensed or banned. Mr Paddick is standing against Labour's current mayor Ken Livingstone and Tory candidate Boris Johnson. He said black cabs were "integral" to London's public transport system. 'Exciting capital' "They (cab drivers) have to pass The Knowledge test and their taxis are subject to the most stringent safety checks. "In return they deserve to... have certain privileges not extended to private hire vehicles. "London black cabs are as much of a hallmark of London as the double-decker bus and we need to acknowledge the role they play in making London the most exciting capital in the world." Under his ten-point plan Mr Paddick also wants traffic lights to be rephased. The former Metropolitan Police officer, who left the force in May 2007, will unveil a full transport manifesto later this month. That's two out of three that's said that! Flanagan must be clutching his old heart

As long as he does'nt follow Livingston's agenda . . . TBH, I quite like Brian Paddick (bar the Oxford Street plans) he would make a good Mayor, the bonus of him not being a politician goes strongly in his favour. His problem is people will concentrate on the big two. Mind you, Living in posh Hertfordshire, I don't even get a vote

On the contrary, I suspect that Paddick's soundbite was based on the premise that the average black cab driver is a lot more likely to vote than the average minicab driver.
On the other hand, do any black cab drivers actually stay in London, apart from Charlie Slater

About 40'000 Minicab drivers. About 25'000 real taxi drivers. Your mate's maths is none to hot.
I wasn’t joking about their eligibility to vote either, its well know that the majority of Minicab drivers are being imported from Africa and East Europe, which equals = No vote. |

Looking at the 2004 result it would appear that Boris has a long way to go to turn over Ken Livingstone. Perhaps Boris and the other guy who supports cab drivers should get some stickers made for those cabbies who support them in order that they can show that support by placing them in the rear window of their cabs? 2004 result. Name 1. Livingstone, Ken 1st Choice votes 685,541 2nd Choice votes 142,839 Total votes 828,380 Name 2. Norris, Steve 1st Choice votes 542,423 2nd Choice votes 124,755 Total Votes 667,170 Regards JD |
