Pedicab taxi service for Skegness

A HAGWORTHINGHAM firm has been given the go-ahead to operate a paid-for pedicab service in Skegness.

A limited 'rickshaw' service was offered by the Skegness Pedicab Company - based at Chalet Bungalow, Main Road, Hagworthingham - during the summer but it was only able to operate on a prescribed route as a tourist attraction rather than as a taxi.

The company has now been given permission from East Lindsey District Council to allow it to operate as taxis which will mean the pedicabs can pick up and take fares anywhere in the Skegness area.

Councillors backed the plan at a meeting of the general licensing committee on Thursday after officers recommended approval.

They said the businesses would be an asset for the town.

A report to councillors said: "This would be an undoubted asset to the district and an additional attraction to the many visitors of the town."

The police, the county council and Skegness Town Council also supported the plans.

A statement from the firm read: "We are committed to providing a fun, sustainable and environmentally friendly form of public transport for all the short journeys around the town"

The finer details of the firm's licence will be outlined at the next meeting on February 22.

If they are licensed as cabs then surely they will have to keep to the maximum set tariff.

And only licensed cab drivers will be able to ride them.

Will it work, I don't think so.

If they are licensed as cabs, don't they have to have an engine of a certain size?

No that's PH.

And no engine size is mentioned, just an engine.

But that's only a local condition/bylaw, and can be changed as and when.

Ours insist on a WAV. Sussex is right, if they can add the condition they can change it as well.
