A MURDER inquiry is under way after a taxi driver was killed in Greenock last night. The Tele understands Mark Fitzsimmons, 25, was stabbed at about 9pm in the Holefarm Road area while on a job for Inverclyde Taxis. His bosses told of their shock this morning at learning of the tragedy. Henry Glasgow, managing director of Inverclyde Taxis, said: “It’s a tragedy that a young man who was going about his work to provide for his family has had his life cut so short. “He was well respected and was one of life’s genuine character and had a fabulous rapport with the office and will be sadly missed by colleagues. “He has a partner and some young children and had worked with us for six or seven months. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time and we will be co-operating fully with the investigation.” Another taxi driver, who asked not to be named, said: “I saw a taxi there with its lights on which was parked weirdly. That was about 9.40. I thought something was up then.” The scene was cordoned off and police were conducting door to door inquiries this morning, while forensic teams conducted a finger tip search. Detective Inspector John Dearie of Greenock police said: “Enquiries are at an early stage and we are anxious to speak to anyone who was in the area of Holefarm Road around the time of the incident.” Anyone with information, should call Greenock Police on 492500 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. My thoughts go out to this drivers family and also drivers that know him. This brings it to light again why we must insist we have some protection like cctv in our cabs or private hire cars. This person might have been identified and caught if we had cctv. Hope they get this scumbag and throw away the key. No doubt with this goverment he will get good three meals a day playstation or xbox to keep his mind active. Theres a lot to be said about chain gangs in america. Bring them here i say.

yet again we see the dangerous side to our proffession it is high time the government started taking this issue more seriously. I feel for the family left behind and hope that the perpertrator(s) are caught and brought to justice |

As I posted recently this make 48 in the last 15/16 years. I wonder how this can be stopped, or if there really is anything we can really do about it.

Imagine a system that drives a guy to take such desperate measures to recover his tenner for a fare. How important was that tenner to him? How is it that the old lags haven't told him that bit is better to remain secure in the cab than chase a scroat for such a tiny sum? How is it that when you call the cops they're not interested when cabbies are being ripped off? How is it that a guy sitting in the cab could call the cops and complain that he had been called some allegedly racist epithet and the cops would attend almost instantly? And how is it that cabbies, subjected to this degree of violence are told that they are not entitled to drive the own cabs, they have to rent from others? This guy is dead. He's already forgotten. Our trade is not geared up to care. He's already history. Thats the kind of trade we work in guys. Even if the locals buy the flowers, man the procession and see the guy into his pit, do we all really care? Do we care enough to do anything about it? Answers on the back of a postage stamp to ....... |

My thoughts are with the drivers family at this time. pitty you could not start your post the same way jasbar this topic is about a tragic event and not about anything else why not post that you feel sorry for his kid who has a life time with no father and a partner who is left alone to bring up a child i think the issue of having your own plate is the last thing on there minds. bet they would love your line "This guy is dead. He's already forgotten. Our trade is not geared up to care. He's already history. Thats the kind of trade we work in guys." it might be in the trade you work in but not the one i do |

Man Arrested Over Taxi Driver Death POLICE last night arrested a man in connection with the death of taxi driver Mark Fitzsimmons. The 25-year-old died after an incident in Holefarm Road, Greenock, Renfrewshire, on Tuesday night. Police said a 38-year-old man had been arrested and was in custody in connection with the death. A full report will be sent to the fiscal. He is to appear at Greenock Sheriff Court onMonday. |
