Thugs attack taxi driver

THUGS tried to choke a taxi driver with his seatbelt and ordered him to
hand over his car keys.

They fled with his mobile phone and a small amount of cash after a man
walked up to the vehicle and told them he had called the police.

A witness appeal has been launched and officers say they are keen to
speak to the man who approached the car.

The robbery happened in Hattersley, at 8am on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old driver had picked up the two men in Gorton and they told
him to take them to Hattersley for a doctor's appointment.

They became aggressive when the car pulled up in Hattersley Road East.

Det Con Steven Hatton, from Tameside CID, said: "This was a terrifying
ordeal for a man who was just going about his daily job. These men
showed a complete disregard for his safety and must be caught."

He added: "This incident shows the dangers taxi drivers face in their job.
It is vital that any witness, or anyone with information, comes forward.

"The incident occurred opposite a bus stop during rush hour and someone
must have seen something. I would also like to speak to the man that told
the offenders he had called the police."

Anyone with information should call Tameside CID on 0161 856 9255 or
Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.

Taxi driver threated with knife

A TAXI driver was punched and threatened with a knife by two men who
demanded cash.

The 48-year-old driver was told to pick up two men on Bideford Drive and
to drive to Timperley at about 11.45pm on Thursday.

But on the way his passengers told the driver to divert up Butcher Lane.

One of the passengers then punched the driver in the face and threatened
to stab him.

He then demanded the driver hand over his cash, but before his attackers
could take anything, they fled from the car and ran down a footpath
towards Wythenshawe Football Club.

The driver suffered bruising and lost a tooth.

Police are now appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the attack or
seen two men fleeing from the black Ford Focus estate to come forward.

Det Con Chris Fox, of Wythenshawe CID, said: "The victim was left badly
shaken up after his ordeal and this incident shows the dangers taxi drivers
face in their job, particularly at night.

"It is vital that any witnesses or anyone with information comes forward."

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Wythenshawe
CID on 0161 856 4853 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Taxi driver 'car-jacked'

A TAXI driver was threatened at knife point and had an iron bar held to his
neck by three men who stole his car.

The driver picked up a man on Manton Close, Salford, and was directed to
Wilmur Avenue in Cheetham Hill where two more men got into his Honda
Civic.

One of the men put a two feet long iron bar to the taxi driver's neck and
pulled him towards the back seat, the man in the front seat then produced
a bread knife with a 14 inch blade and demanded the driver hand over his
cash, mobile phone and car keys.

The 36-year-old driver was then bundled out of his car and the offenders
drove off. The car was later found abandoned on Residential Street.

Det Con Richard Hudd said: "This was a very nasty assault on a innocent
taxi driver who was simply going about his job.

"The offenders were carrying dangerous, potentially lethal, weapons and
the victim could have suffered serious, if not fatal, injuries if those
weapons were used.

"This highlights the dangers taxi drivers face every day and it is vital we
apprehend the offenders so they can be punished. I would appeal to
anyone with information about this incident to come forward and contact
police."

The ringleader, who was carrying the knife, is white, about 19 years old,
5ft 8in to 5ft 10in tall and was well built with a strong face and full lips. He
was wearing black trousers, a black top and a black woollen hat that was
rolled up. Police have released an e-fit of this man.

The second man is white, about 17 or 18 years old, of chubby build, and
about 5ft 6in tall. He was wearing a grey hooded top with darker shoulder
patches and black tracksuit bottoms, he was carrying a metal bar.

The third offender is described as white, of skinny build, about 5ft 8in tall
and was said to be about 17 or 18 years old. He had a long face and neck
and was dressed in a black tracksuit with the hood pulled up.

Detectives are appealing for anyone with information about this incident to
call them on 0161 856 1901 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
