Extra protection for taxi drivers

Taxi drivers in Northampton are receiving extra protection from police
against the threat of attack.

A new radio system, linked to CCTV, now allows drivers who are in danger
to radio through to their operator, who can then alert police directly.

There were more than 60 reported attacks on taxi drivers in the town last
year.

A Northamptonshire Police spokesman said the system will enable officers
to respond quicker to drivers in danger.

There were 62 reported attacks on drivers in Northampton between 1
January and 31 December, last year.

Drivers were the victims of robbery, arson, ABH and racially aggravated
common assault.

'Eyes and ears'

The new radio system is linked to CCTV at St John's Police Station in
Northampton.

John Kelly, secretary of Northampton Hackney Association, said: "I have
personally been a victim of an attack by a passenger, so I
whole-heartedly welcome the new system.

"It is a worthwhile idea and public awareness may make possible
attackers think twice."

Insp Ally White, of Northamptonshire Police, said: "The system is primarily
for the safety of the town's drivers who do not know who they are inviting
into their vehicle, making them extremely vulnerable.

"Taxi drivers are the eyes and ears of the town and will be able to quickly
and directly report any crimes to us."

Hmm, so it's a case of we scratch your back and you scratch ours :-s

Do you think this system still would have been introduced to help drivers if the above factor wasn't involved?

That is the way most things happen in this trade.

I suspect the police are funding the radios, so they must appear to be spending tax-payers money correctly.
