Err? Because it's being investigated by the Police and the London Development Agency as part of the Lee Jasper scandal / enquiry.

Still, it's another potential nail in the socialist dictators coffin, and that can only be good news for the London Taxi trade. \:D/

London's mayor knew there were financial problems with some community projects before he publicly denied it, it has been revealed.
London Development Agency (LDA) chairman Manny Lewis said he told Ken Livingstone there were "discrepancies" in some of the projects' accounts.

The mayor subsequently stated publicly that all finances could be accounted for, a London Assembly meeting heard.

The mayor said on Thursday that he had not been fully briefed at that time.

Fraud allegations

Six projects funded by the LDA - the mayor's business arm - are being investigated by police over allegations of fraud.

They include south London youth project Brixton Base.

When asked about its funding in December, Mr Livingstone said: "We have a complete audit trail of all these organisations."

However on Thursday he told the London Assembly: "I had at that stage had no specific briefing about any one grant."

He added: "What I had seen was the banner headlines in the Evening Standard suggesting my staff were involved in fraud. I was 100% certain that wasn't true."

Lee Jasper is an adviser to the mayor and a patron of Brixton Base

The role of the mayor's chief race adviser Lee Jasper in the distribution of grants was also questioned at the City Hall meeting on Thursday.

London Assembly members expressed concern that Mr Jasper was both an adviser to the mayor and a patron of Brixton Base, roles which could potentially create a conflict of interest.

LDA chief executive Anthony Mayer said: "Mr Jasper was acting in two capacities, as patron and as the mayor's adviser.

"I do not think there was sufficient clarity as to these two different capacities."

Mr Livingstone accepted that the role of advisers must be clarified, and that new rules were needed to prevent conflicts of interest.

The LDA also pledged to begin a review of many other projects it has funded.

Last month an internal LDA review cleared Mr Jasper of any wrong-doing.

If everyone knows this information then maybe the police are using him for information. They do that you know, they would follow them and monitor their phone calls so that they can get information on even bigger fish.

Other papers are mentioning it. Thought 'Taxi' would, as it's a big story for the London Taxi Trade, as is the whole LDA funding story,(they're funding certain people to do the Knowledge).

It would appear you are saying the Livingstone administration used public money for positive discrimination? I think that is a fair comment but we did highlight that fact when it first came to light.

Jasper suspended. Another nail in the socialists dictators re-election campaign. \:D/

Mayor suspends funds row adviser

Lee Jasper's role in funding has been called into question
London's mayor has suspended his race adviser after a series of allegations of financial irregularities.
Mayor Ken Livingstone said he had taken the step after Lee Jasper himself asked for the newspaper allegations to be referred to the police to investigate.

An internal inquiry had already cleared Mr Jasper of any wrongdoing.

The allegations concern money paid by the London Development Agency (LDA) - the mayor's business arm - to a number of black organisations.

One of them was Brixton Base which is run by Errol Walters, a friend and close associate of Mr Jasper.

'Unsatisfactory report'

Brixton Base received £280,000 from the LDA to pay rent, even though the LDA is its landlord. It also received £230,000 to stage three short courses in arts.

An internal LDA inquiry found that Mr Jasper had acted legally.

The report said it did not have the power to look at claims private individuals took money from organisations to which the LDA had given funds.

It has referred these allegations to the police to investigate.

But the London Assembly described the report as "unsatisfactory" and has called for an independent inquiry.

The Evening Standard should immediately take any evidence it claims to have to the police or stop making these false allegations

London mayor Ken Livingstone

On Friday, Mr Jasper asked for allegations made in the Evening Standard newspaper to be referred to the police.

"I am being prevented from clearing my name, black organisations across London are being weakened by a systematic campaign in the Evening Standard from seeking funds, and a deliberate attempt is being made to divert attention from the real issues confronting London at the Mayoral election," he said.

"This is being done deliberately and consciously - far from seeking clarity, the Evening Standard for 10 weeks has been running stories of false allegations against me without taking alleged evidence to the police."

Mr Livingstone stressed the police had not approached him and that he thought the investigation would clear his race adviser.

"The Evening Standard should immediately take any evidence it claims to have to the police or stop making these false allegations - in the good old phrase, 'put up or shut up'.

"In agreeing Lee's request I have also made the extremely difficult decision that, like any GLA officer subject to a police investigation, Lee Jasper will be suspended pending the outcome of the police investigation," Mr Livingstone said.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said it will examine any material that is handed to it on any subject where there are claims of a criminal act in London.
