Yob brick attack left me fearing for life

YOBS threw a brick through a police car windscreen after a cabbie called
999 when his vehicle was attacked.

Taxi driver Mark Shipley, 49, rang for help when his cab was showered
with rocks as he drove past Anfield cemetery.

His attackers then threw a brick at the police patrol car as it arrived on the scene.

Mr Shipley today said he feared he would die as the attack made him
swerve across Priory Road.

The cabbie, who is married with two teenage children, took these pictures
to show the damage the yobs caused during the potentially deadly attack.

He said: “I was so shaken by what happened I just jumped out of the cab
and started screaming at them that they could have killed me.

“My cab was hit six or seven times and one brick was embedded in my
windscreen. It could have gone right through and hit me.

“I veered and missed a nearby lamppost by inches.”

The yobs, who hid behind a wall near the cemetery, pelted a second cab
as well as the police car. The officers were taken to hospital after being
showered with glass when their windscreen smashed in the attack at
9.15pm on Saturday, February 9.

Mr Shipley said: “I’m just trying to earn a living. But when you’re driving
along and your windscreen splinters it all feels a bit too close.

“I haven’t been back to that road yet, but I have to go where the job
takes me.”

Acting Inspector Andy Doyle, of Merseyside police, said patrols had been
increased in the area to disperse groups of youths and respond to any incidents.

He said: “It’s a busy road and certainly not a no-go area for taxi drivers.
But I’d like to reiterate how seriously we take these incidents and urge
people to continue reporting them.”
