Warning to taxi drivers after arrests

POLICE have made a spate of arrests after two taxi drivers were robbed
in separate incidents on Sunday.

The first incident took place just before 2am when two men took a taxi
ride from Woolgrove Road to Radcliffe Road in Hitchin. After stopping, one
male got out and allegedly opened the driver's door and stole cash and a
gold chain.

The driver was left with an injured hand.

A 17-year-old from Hitchin has been charged with robbery and was
remanded in custody at Stevenage Magistrates' Court yesterday
(Wednesday), while another 17-year-old has also been arrested but
released on bail to appear at Stevenage police station at a later date.

In the second incident four men were believed to have taken a taxi from
Stormont Road to Ickleford Sports Club at just after 9pm.

On arrival the taxi driver was allegedly grabbed around the neck and told
to hand over his takings of £200 before the four men ran off.

Two 17-year-olds and a 28-year-old have been arrested and released on
police bail.

At the time of going to press a 14-year-old boy was also in police custody
in connection with both incidents.

The police have issued crime prevention advice to all taxi drivers in North
Herts which includes asking them to ascertain names and addresses at the
start of a journey and to report anything suspicious to the police.
