You don't have to be over the threshold to register for VAT. You can do it at any time but would you lose more than you would gain? VAT would have to come out of your fares. You can't add it on top, well you can if you are PH. |

Even when registered you only start paying once you reach the threshold, if you stay below it you pay nothing or receive anything back |

Since when? I registered for VAT when I was at least £10K below the threshold and received the VAT back on all my outgoings from the first day and for the 3 previous years aquisitions and I had to charge VAT on sales from day one as well. |

And don't forget to tell how much work is involved preparing your VAT returns.... and how much you get paid for the privilege |

I use my computer for my accounts so when it comes to the end of the quarter I just read off the numbers and put them on the form. It takes minutes. As they say in the adverts, tax doesn't have to be taxing. |

Only winners ON being VAT registered are PSV owners who can Reclaim VAT on Expenses including Fuel but who do not need to charge VAT as they can Carry More than 10 Passengers as PSV operators because PSV fares are Zero VAT rated.....if VAT registered as a taxi /PH Driver owner youd need to Add 17.5 % percent to every fare or you would end up with that amount being taken from the full fare price seeing as you need to charge VAT in order to Claim VAT Back..this would mean you losing more than you gain or having to add 17.5 pence on every pound you charge which would go down like a lead Balloon with your customers....last option of Being VAT rergistered is a Flat 8% rate charged on Fares, but then you cannot reclaim VAT by this Method.....oh and Ive seen 113.9 per litre in the borders for Diesel..best avoid VAT if possible |

Actually it is not 10 passengers, it is 8 passengers + driver and crew. |
