25 Feb 2008 Black cab drivers in association row A bitter feud has broken out between black cab drivers in Lancashire. The row started when a group of drivers joined the Bolton, Bury and Preston Hackney Association (BBPHA) after becoming disilluioned with the Preston Hackney Carriage Association (PHCA). BBPHA chairman Charlie Oakes has signed up 163 black cab drivers from the city as members of his organisation and believes the PHCA should now disband and hand power over to his organisation. But Mark Selley, PHCA secretary, insists that none of the three meetings he called since August has the power to make changes within his organisation. The matter came to a head on Monday, February 18, when Mr Oakes and some of his members were denied entry to the PHCA annual meeting. Mr Oakes said: "We have held our meetings, the latest of which in January was held in front of a representative from the National Taxi Association and my solicitor, in the interests of openess and transparency and the decision was confirmed to remove Mr Selley from his role and affiliate with the BBPHA as unanimous on every occasion. "How many times does Mr Selley want to have it confirmed for him? "We do not want him using the PHCA name. If he wants to set up his own association that is fine but I do not want people saying things which can come back to my drivers." Mr Selley, who was elected secretary of the PHCA at last week's meeting, confirmed that "a number of drivers" had joined the BBPHA in August and that a meeting was held that month. He said "This meeting was not a meeting of the PHCA and none of the subsequent meetings were members of the PHCA either. "The only meeting of the PHCA was its annual general meeting last Monday, at which members expressed no desire whatsoever to form any kind of alliance with BBPHA. "I would add that we have got more pressing issues to deal with than to get involved in a a spat with Mr Oakes." Mr Oakes has appealed to Preston Council to resolve the dispute. Coun David Hammond, chairman of the licensing sub-committee said: "We will not get involved. "We do not have a problem with the PHCA and, until such time that its committee informs us that it no longer exists, we will continue to work with them as they are doing a good job." BRIAN: Can I... join your group? REG: No. P**s off. BRIAN: I didn't want to sell this stuff. It's only a job. I hate the Romans as much as anybody. PEOPLE'S FRONT OF JUDEA: Shhhh. Shhhh. Shhh. Shh. REG: Oh, yeah? How much? BRIAN: A lot! REG: Right. You're in. Listen. The only people we hate more than the Romans are the f**king Judean People's Front. P.F.J.: Yeah... JUDITH: Splitters. P.F.J.: Splitters... FRANCIS: And the Judean Popular People's Front. P.F.J.: Yeah. Oh, yeah. Splitters. Splitters... LORETTA: And the People's Front of Judea. P.F.J.: Yeah. Splitters. Splitters... FRANCIS: Whatever happened to the Popular Front, Reg? REG: He's over there. |

You have to hand it to Charlie, he does work hard. But when he was the boss of the Bolton Taxi association, a new outfit wanted to start up and he said at the time that Bolton doesn't need two taxi associations and that his association was the only one drivers needed. Anyway Charlie got voted out of his position at the Bolton Taxi association and guess what, He decided not to take his own advice and instead formed his own association. That meant Bolton now had two taxi associations. Naturally they both fought for the right of trade representation with the council and not surprisingly at that particular time Charlie lost out. So I believe. I suppose while your happy being the only kid on the block you want to keep the status quo but as soon as you fall from grace or get removed from office then your principles have a makeover. It would seem Charlie has plans for expansion but what is he going to do if he gets ousted from this new organisation? Will we see the birth of another association headed by Charlie and what would this one be called? Does anyone else know of any others who have taken the huff after being recycled and then started their own association only to be ousted again? lol Regards JD |
