Cromers taxis create friction

Taxi troubles are causing friction down a town centre street at Cromer say traders.

Cabs were overspilling from the taxi rank and parking on the wrong side
of the road and pavement town councillors were told.

Former sub postmaster Jim Page said during public question time he had
been asked by traders and residents of Tucker Street to raise the issue.

Shoppers were having problems on the paths and getting out of shop
doorways, and sometimes being met with strong language by drivers
when they were challenged.

Local community policeman PC Gary Medler said there were so many cab
drivers now the rank was not big enough.

The rank was moved to Tucker Street when the town centre traffic system
and parking were re-jigged during regeneration works five years ago.

Councillors agreed to approach North Norfolk District Council to review the
rank situation and look at whether a different or extra one was needed.

Only last week the council's licensing committee heard there was a
growing demand for taxi drivers, but decided not to allow applicants
temporary permits until criminal record checks came through, because it
was not in the interests of public safety.
