Teen charged with cabbie's killing in court

A STUDENT charged with manslaughter has appeared before a judge for
the first time charged with killing a taxi driver.

Cabbie Raymond Quigley, 72, was found unconscious near Cherry Knowle
Hospital, in Sunderland, in September 2, after an alleged assault, and was
taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital where he died.

Dale Pattison, 18, of Manilla Street, Sunderland, appeared before Judge
David Hodson at Newcastle Crown Court today.

He was ordered back to the court for a plea and case management
hearing on March 27.

Prosecutor Geoff Mason fixed a provisional date for trial on August 11.

It was expected the trial would last for five days, the court heard.

Pattison, who was dressed in an open necked white shirt and black suit,
did not speak during the short, ten minute long hearing.

He glanced occasionally at the judge and at members of his family, in the public gallery.

He did not enter a plea and was released on conditional bail.
