Taxi firm boss backs Damian's Law

A TAXI boss is backing the ‘Damian’s Law’ campaign to stem the flow of
bloodshed on the streets of Inverclyde.

The cabbie community is still reeling from the recent death of driver Mark
Fitzsimmons, far right, — and Henry Glasgow, managing director of
Inverclyde Taxis, is backing calls to lock up anyone found carrying a knife
for at least two years.

Mr Glasgow has met with grieving dad John Muir, who is fighting to get the
law changed after his son Damian, right, was knifed to death in Greenock
last year.

He said: “I had a long meeting with John and I was encouraged by his
bravery.

“The business has experienced the unfortunate incident of the untimely
death of Mark Fitzsimmons and this has re-ignited the issue of carrying knives.

“For the general safety of the public I welcome a two-year mandatory sentence.

“Mark’s death highlights the unfortunate danger that comes with the job
and I back the campaign to highlight unfortunate things can happen when
you carry out any job.”

The taxi chief was impressed by John’s determination to change things for
the better in the light of his son’s tragic death.

He said: “I think it is a bold step but it would be one welcomed by most
people in the community. There is always going to be a small minority, but
if we could reduce that minority it would benefit the local community.

“Our best wishes go out to Mark’s family.”

Mark’s funeral is being held today at St Patrick’s Church, Orangefield,
Greenock. A man has been charged in connection with his death.
