This is a TDO public service video highlighting the human nature of some people who appear not to be overly concerned as to how they get home?

Manchester, 3 am Sunday Morning 24/2/08

There is no commentary attached to this video because it speaks for itself.

Any observations or interpretations drawn from this video are in the eye of the beholder and no inference is drawn by TDO.

The first part of this video is conducted at Shudehill close to the Printworks complex. Some might remember that at Christmas 2007 a young lady who wanted to get home was picked up from this very spot by a man in a car, taken to an isolated place nearby and sexually assaulted.

Perhaps it is easy to understand how this came about when you see the number of women who stick out their hand for any type of transport home. The camera operator was asked four times by females for a taxi ride home, even though the vehicle wasn't a Taxi.

The second location is Manchester Victoria Station where some people gather for Taxis or pre booked private hire vehicles because they find the Printworks Taxi rank which is close by, over subscribed.

This video is 21 minutes long, 90 meg and for best results it should be viewed in a 320 x 240 size video frame, I'm afraid anyone with narrowband will find this extremely time consuming to download and the effort might well outweigh the benefit? If you do want a copy then it is advisable that you ask a friend to download it for you and put it on a compact disc.

Are you using Firefox? Explorer seems ok. This is what happened when I used firefox I got the message box up which gave me two options, either open with windows media player or save to disc. The OK button was mute so I pulled down the arrow on the message box and put in the only other option which was use an alternate player, this brought up a folder on my computer where to look for the alternative device. Click cancel on that folder box and the OK button on the message box then becomes live. It must be a conflict with Firefox. Let me know if it works. I also think you will be better off saving it to file rather than streaming it.

That is only the first instalment of many, I would keep watching this space because there will be lots of exiting footage of women consciously disregarding their own safety and the lack of enforcement in and around the Northwest.

It took me all day yesterday to edit the video and cut out the waste but I hope it was worth it.

I'll be sending it to Manchester city council and a few other people once I'm happy with the content.

I have to thank my new North West correspondent for their time and effort and braving the drunks and misfits of Manchester.

Regards

I know which one you are referring to lol, but did you see the girls in Cowboy hats? Well I'm lead to believe that there were at least six of them and no one would take them but if you look closely you will see a high top minibus type vehicle travelling toward the camera on the opposite side of the road. The driver stops just out of view and I'm told he shouted over to the girls "I'll take all of you" and that's when you see them scamper off but what you don't see, is them climbing into his vehicle.

The road is a rat run for unlicensed vehicles looking for flaggers and it's easy to see how women can put themselves in compromising situations.

I don't know if you saw the North west inside out program which was supposed to highlight a breach of the law that doesn't exist but the presenter said he approached 3 Berwick licensed Taxis and he could only convince one of them to break the law. That Manchester Video shows plenty willing to break the law so it doesn't matter where you come from or what you drive because the practice is commonplace and what's more it goes unchecked everywhere and not just Newcastle.

I did watch it JD, and I sent off a complaint to the BBC about them not stating that because the licence fee's where so much cheaper thats why so many are going to Berwick for them

To people like you and I and everyone else on this website we know where the truth lies and to say this report was grossly unbalanced would be an understatement. I hope this presenter passes our way at some stage in his unbalanced lifetime so we can set him straight on a few facts. If anyone wishes to email him my comments then be my guest.

Could you run into trouble with the law in anyway by recording the public at either a taxi rank or anywhere else?

I ask because I've been thinking of doing it myself. :?

It's fine on firefox.

I can't believe the black cab trade in Manchester allow this to happen without making a big fat fuss over it.

I think it would make sense to bang it up on youtube under the heading of 'Manchester Council allow a free for all.'.

If it's a public place, it should be ok.

Not at all. Just don't start following people around lol.

Images captured for recreational purposes, such as with a mobile phone, "digital camera" or "camcorder", are exempt.

The use of conventional cameras (not CCTV) by the news media or for artistic purposes such as for film making are not covered by this code as they are subject to special treatment in the DPA.

But what if you are not a news medium and you are not doing it for artistic purposes? and surely filming, say a taxi rank, cannot be classed as recreational, personally I would feel strange telling someone I filmed a taxi rank for recreational purposes.

The fact is you could be doing it for evidential purposes or statistical use, so does that change anything?

If you are unsure of your rights just pick up the phone tomorrow and ask the DPC.
