Fare Deal For Cabbies As Airport Fee Ditched

A Licensing boss today welcomed the abandonment of controversial
barrier charges.

BAA had proposed a barrier system that would have seen airport cabbies
pay £1 every time they picked up passengers from the Dyce terminal.

It sparked outrage and lightning-strike action among taxi drivers.

But, as revealed in later editions of yesterday's Evening Express, the two
sides have brokered a deal.

And it is understood any potential charges in the future would be done in
consultation with the city council's licensing committee - and only if a fare
increase was asked for by ComCabs, which is now in charge of the airport fleet.

Convener of the licensing committee Callum McCaig said: "I am pleased
that the charges are not going to be introduced.

"BAA's reasoning for this has been increasing costs. I think they really
need to justify what these costs are.

"It can't just be a way to make money. We don't want it to be a system
that is unfair to taxi drivers or for their passengers.

"I would welcome the chance for the committee to talk to BAA if this was
being considered in the future."

Cllr McCaig wrote to BAA on behalf of the licensing committee to complain
about the charges.

BAA said the charges were necessary to pay for increased security since
the attempted terrorist attack at Glasgow airport.

Taxi bosses had pleaded with the council to add £1 onto the fares to take
account of the extra barrier charge.

Drivers claimed the charges would cost them £10,500 a year. Rainbow
taxis resigned from their role controlling the airport cabs, as of March 31.

Permit charges for drivers are still set to rise from £34 to £60.

Aye £130 per week to work at the airport as part of Comedy cabs. No permit fee just £60 airport charge and £70 comedy cabs radio hire.

£130 per week to work airport is total MADNESS!!!

No driver could justify £130 per week to work a taxi rank, (but sadly many will)
