City taxi firm is takeover target

ONE of Liverpool's oldest taxi firms has become a takeover target.

Merseycabs, which claims to be the city's biggest hackney cab operator in the area with more than 400 taxis, has been approached by a third party interested in buying the business, a Merseycabs spokesman confirmed.

He revealed that the future of the 50-year-old company could be decided next Friday when the firm's 19 shareholders consider the inquiry.

But he insisted that the firm did not encourage the approach or invite any offers: "We have not put the company on the market or for sale, but if you get an offer you have to put it to the shareholders.

"We have had an inquiry to purchase the company, but it's up to the shareholders if they take up the offer."

Speculation among the Merseyside taxi industry includes claims that an overseas firm has made the approach.

The city centre firm, based in Abbey House, Falkland Street, was formed in 1958. It claims to have a 25% share of the market.
