Taxi boss rapped for records chaos

The operator of a Bury taxi firm has been fined £1,600 after failing to keep proper records of driver and vehicle movements.

Majahid Jahangir, of Ingham Street, Bury, appeared at Bury Magistrates’ Court and admitted four charges of failing to keep proper records for vehicles and drivers based with the Tiger Cars private hire firm at Bolton Road in Bury.

Jahangir was fined £400 on each of four charges and ordered to pay £500 to Bury Council which brought the prosecution.

The court was told that a council inspector compared the information with records held by the council and discovered 23 discrepancies including plate numbers for cars, badge numbers for drivers and descriptions of cars which were all incorrect and some required details also omitted. Additionally, a large number of the entries in the booking records were illegible.

A subsequent inspection, after a vehicle had missed a council fitness test, revealed that some of the records had been altered after first being recorded.

Councillor John Costello, chair of the council’s licensing and safety panel, said, “This case is a reminder to taxi operators that they are required as a condition of their licence to keep accurate records.
“These records are vital to ensure the proper running of these businesses and to ensure that operations can be effectively monitored.”
