Taxi boss’s ‘error’ THE boss of an Egremont taxi firm drove one of his hackney carriages without a licence, Whitehaven magistrates heard. William Ireland, 48, of Acrewells Farm, Frizington, pleaded guilty by letter but was given a conditional discharge. Magistrates ruled “he did not mean to break the law, it was an administrative error more than anything else”. Copeland Council told the court that the defendant, as the proprietor of Stirling Cabs, had eight hackney carriages but did not have a licence to drive one himself when he was at the wheel on December 3. He had since applied for and been granted one. Ireland said he thought that because he was not carrying any passengers or plying for hire he had no need for a licence. He was driving to a post office to renew the vehicle’s road tax. Court clerk John Mattock said: “Whether someone is carrying fares or not you still need the appropriate licence.” Ireland had to pay £50 costs. |

Nothing wrong with a conditional discharge for this offence. Should he commit any offence in the next 6/12/18 months, depending on the length, he will be sentenced for the driving without a taxi license as well.
