Driver 'Devastated' As Taxi Torched

A taxi driver's out-of-action cab was torched by arsonists in Torquay early
yesterday.

Police were alerted by firefighters who were suspicious about the cause of
the blaze, which wrecked James Bird's Mitsubishi Carisma in Barton Hill
Road. It is thought the offenders smashed the windscreen before starting
the fire inside the vehicle, which had been off the road since Christmas.

The alarm was raised just before 12.30am by James's colleague, who was
driving past when he saw flames coming from the vehicle.

He rang 999 and James, who was able to move his rented cab away from
the flames which were in danger of spreading to the second vehicle.

James's sister, Marie Foxhall, who lives in Southway Avenue, just off
Barton Hill Road, said: "The car then exploded and rattled the windows of
our home. James is devastated by what's happened."

Watch commander Dave Crawford said there was no obvious causes of
ignition for the fire as the vehicle's battery was flat.

He suspected the fire started in the front seat area around the dashboard.

Michelle said the car had not been used because James was saving up to
fix a fault with its turbo.

Police investigating the incident were due to speak to James and other
witnesses yesterday.

Anyone with information should ring police on 08452 777444, quoting log 27.

One fire crew attended the scene where they used a hosereel to
extinguish the blaze.
