Appeal for taxi driver 'assault' witnesses
TAXI driver needed hospital treatment after a reveller he picked up is
alleged to have turned on him.
Two people believed to have been travelling in a passing taxi, who were
dropped off in Cornwall Street, Hartlepool, could hold the key to the
identity of the alleged attacker.
The driver was reportedly punched to the face, causing a cut to his lip and
bruises, after he collected a passenger from Station Approach, off Church
Street, Hartlepool, in the early hours of Saturday
morning.
The taxi headed onto Huckelhoven Way, where police say the passenger
became abusive and the car stopped.
The cabbie was then subjected to verbal and physical abuse, said a
Cleveland Police spokeswoman.
As a result, police would like to hear from the people who were dropped
off in Cornwall Street.
The spokeswoman said: "As the driver drove onto Huckelhoven Way, the
passenger became abusive.
"The taxi stopped and the driver was subjected to verbal and physical
assault.
"It is believed another taxi driver and his passengers, who were dropped
off in Cornwall Street, assisted the taxi driver until police attended."
Anyone with information regarding the alleged assault, which is said to
have taken place around 3am on Saturday, should contact Detective
Constable Barry Corbett of Hartlepool Police on (01642) 302126 or
Crimestoppers anonymously on (0800) 555 111.
