4 Mar 2008 Man dies after shooting in Tipton A man has died in hospital in the West Midlands after being shot in the street last night, police said today. He was identified locally as a 39-year-old taxi driver and a hard-working family man who apparently died on his own doorstep. Police say that they have arrested a 36-year-old man in connection with the shooting, which happened at 9.30pm in Tipton, Birmingham. A neighbour said that she had been watching television when she heard about four loud bangs outside that she at first took to be fireworks. "I have heard that he opened the door and was shot straight through the chest," said the mother of four who did not wish to be named. "Within a minute or two, I heard a helicopter hovering. It came really, really low and I heard the house vibrating. Our living room turned bright blue with all the flashing lights." She added: "I was scared. Ten minutes earlier I had just brought the shopping in. We have never had trouble like this before. It’s a quiet road, with kids playing outside." Tudor Street was closed today while officers investigated and detectives appealed for witnesses. Paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service who were sent to the scene said that they found the man very seriously injured. “They attempted to stabilise his condition before taking him on blue lights to Russells Hall Hospital where medics were on stand-by to continue treatment," an ambulance spokesman said. “The paramedic on the response vehicle travelled with the ambulance because of the critical nature of the patient’s condition. Unfortunately, despite all of the efforts of ambulance and hospital staff, it was not possible to save the man and he died later.” Meanwhile a 26-year-old man who was shot in the head outside a nightclub in Harlesden at 5am on Sunday remains in a critical condition in a North London hospital.
