Illegal taxi drivers caught

THREE illegal immigrants were found to be working illegally as licensed taxi drivers for Milton Keynes Council after immigration and council officers carried out a joint operation.

The officers from the Border and Immigration Agency (BIA) acted on intelligence and arrested three Pakistani male nationals at Synergy Park, Chesney Wold, Bleak Hall, Milton Keynes on Tuesday.

None of the illegal immigrants had permission to work in the UK. Steps are now being taken by the BIA to return them to Pakistan as soon as possible.

Gail Adams, Border and Immigration Agency Regional Director, said: "The Border and Immigration Agency is determined to put a stop to illegal working in Buckinghamshire. We have teams visiting businesses across the county to make sure they are not breaking the law. Anyone found to be working illegally should know that we will seek to remove them from the country. Our message to employers who do not take this issue seriously is simple - if you employ illegal workers you could be named and shamed and face criminal charges."

Employers unsure of the steps they need to take to avoid employing illegal workers can visit www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/employingmigrants or they can call the Border and Immigration Agency Employers Helpline on 0845 010 6677.

Anyone who suspects that illegal workers are being employed at a business in Buckinghamshire should contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where anonymity can be assured.

The council will now carry out a full review of all licensed taxi and private hire drivers to ensure that no further fraudulent applications have been made.

A Milton Keynes Taxi licensing enforcement spokesman said: "Obviously we will continue to work closely with other agencies to ensure that the public can have faith in our systems. "Drivers should be aware that these types of checks are ongoing and if any attempt is made to deceive the council then it will be identified."

If councils take licensing seriously there is absolutely no need for any council to be caught out in this way. The problem is, some councils do not take licensing serious enough and that is why there are probably many more people from Pakistan and elsewhere who are working illegally and not only in the hackney carriage and private hire trade but also in many other trades.

The story lead me to believe that that these three gentlemen were licensed by MK. Perhaps the reporter should have said "three illegal immigrants were found to be working illegally as taxi drivers" and leave the word licensed out of it? I suspect there are probably hundreds of illegal immigrants working as so called illegal taxi drivers so what's so significant about MK?

I don't think anyone who pays their wack has a problem with the tax number issue, even if the legalities are in doubt.

But I doubt these illegal immigrants would be effected.

The only comment I made was in reference to the legality of the condition, I made no comment on the sentiment behind it. All applicants already have to submit their National insurance number in a CRB check but if these drivers weren't illegal immigrants then they wouldn't have national insurance numbers, or would they?

I think you have two points of discussion here, one, "is the condition actually legal" and two, "if it is not legal then should it made made legal" by amending legislation?

If the intention of Dundee is to try and stop people who are unemployed from obtaining or renewing their badge, then that in my opinion would most definitely be unlawful.

In the past I have thought about this and also other similar methods but I have always come to the same conclusion, that as the legislation currently stands it is unlawful.
