WALES: Youth is detained after cab attack

A YOUTH who punched a taxi driver and stole his sat nav has been detained for 18 months.

The 17-year-old - who cannot be named due to his age - was said to be drunk when he flagged down a taxi in Nelson Street, Wrexham on Christmas Eve.

He then sat in the back seat, telling the driver "he just wanted to sit there".

It was then alleged by the victim, aged 30, that the youth then punched him in the jaw, although the defendant claimed it was a "forceful push".

He also admitted stealing the sat nav - worth pounds 200 - and the judge, Mr Recorder Rhys Row lands, sentenced him to an 18-month detention and training order.

Mold Crown Court was told that the defendant - who also kicked a dent in the taxi as he ran off - was becoming in stitutionalised.

Since the age of 13 he had spent the vast majority of his life behind bars and had previously received a four year sentence for throwing bottles containing paraffin at police officers during the Caia Park riots.

The incident had left the cab driver frightened to go to parts of Wrexham at night and he was concerned when he had young male passengers in his vehicle.
