TAXIS HOLD DEMO OVER RANK ROW
A CITY will be in chaos today when an estimated 170 taxis clog up its streets in protest.
More than half of Waterford's cabbies will circle the city between 1pm and 3pm as a protest against the lack of spaces for their cars.
A delegation will then go to City Hall on The Mall and meet Waterford City Council officials.
The demo comes a week after revellers were left stranded when a row erupted between gardai and taxi drivers.
Up to 30 cabs stopped work on Easter Saturday after one driver was issued with a ticket for alleged illegal parking at the rank on John Street, which has restrictions.
Taxi Drivers Union spokesman Noel McLawrence said: "Rank-and-file gardai don't know where the rank is.
"There are thousands out on the middle of the road on a Saturday and there are no facilities for people to queue and taxis can't get on the rank."
The council's Billy Duggan said: "There are ongoing talks between us and taxi drivers regarding spaces."
