Protest cabbies to meet with council

BThe Northern Echo

TAXI drivers in a North-East town are to meet with council officers tomorrow to discuss proposed increases in license fees.

Drivers of taxis and private hire vehicles in Stockton have held a series of protests in recent weeks to voice their concerns about the possibility of having to pay fees of about £800 a year.

Stockton Hackney Drivers Association have submitted a six-page letter of objection against the changes.

Speaking on behalf of the association, chairman Basharat Mahmood, 46, said: "We believe our protest demonstration was justified and we are now looking forward to a positive outcome from the meeting we will have with the council.

"We asked drivers if they would abandon last week's 'slow drive' but some wished to carry out one more demonstration to show the public how angry we are about the proposed increases.

"A much shorter parade took place and passed off without causing any major disruption."

Acting secretary of the association Javid Khazir said: "We are pleased that the council has recognised publicly that we have raised a number of serious issues and are not simply opposing the fees increases without good cause.

"We hope that the meeting will bring an agreement to examine the whole area of licensing administration so that we can have confidence, that for the future, the council's practices and systems are efficient and result in reasonable costs to the trade, comparable with many other authorities in the North-East."

The association has no plans for any further demonstrations or withdrawal of service pending the outcome of the meeting. Members are hoping that a compromise can be reached.
