OLDHAM A drunken taxi driver who was preparing to ferry passengers while twice the drink-drive limit has been banned from trading for at least five years.
Police stopped Jahangir Ahmed on his way to pick up people from a rank on St Mary's Way. Ahmed, 44, of Savoy Street, had his taxi licence revoked and will have to keep a clean for record for at least five years before he can apply to get it back. He had already been banned from driving for two years after he was convicted of drink-driving.
Council licensing chief Tony Allen said this was an 'unusual' case. He said: "The vast majority of the trade guard their reputation for providing a safe haven for passengers."

That's a bit harsh.
In Lothian & Borders, we have officers who have been caught over the limit and they are still working for the police - not forgetting those officers with convictions ranging form breech of the peace, to willful fire raising perjury and assault.
Coming to think of it, we even have an MP, Lord Watson, who was convicted of trying to set fire to the Prestonfield House hotel in Edinburgh. I believe he is back serving in the House of Lords.
