| Post subject: | Drunken Oldham Cabbie banned |
Manchester Evening News April 5th OLDHAM A drunken taxi driver who was preparing to ferry passengers while twice the drink-drive limit has been banned from trading for at least five years. Police stopped Jahangir Ahmed on his way to pick up people from a rank on St Mary's Way. Ahmed, 44, of Savoy Street, had his taxi licence revoked and will have to keep a clean for record for at least five years before he can apply to get it back. He had already been banned from driving for two years after he was convicted of drink-driving. Council licensing chief Tony Allen said this was an 'unusual' case. He said: "The vast majority of the trade guard their reputation for providing a safe haven for passengers." ______________________ |

In Lothian & Borders, we have officers who have been caught over the limit and they are still working for the police - not forgetting those officers with convictions ranging form breech of the peace, to willful fire raising perjury and assault.
Coming to think of it, we even have an MP, Lord Watson, who was convicted of trying to set fire to the Prestonfield House hotel in Edinburgh. I believe he is back serving in the House of Lords.

HARSH! He has been done for drink driving TWICE. Would you want your family to be carried by him?

I personally feel the rules should allow for the guilty person never being able to trade as a taxi driver again. If I worked for Sainsbury and went to work drunk I would be sacked and never employed there again. |

Ah, but if you were a high ranking police office or a politician you would be welcomed back into the fold, all your sins would be forgiven. A nice little job working for a different department on a high salary. Oh and that's if you were convicted in the first place. More often than not these little indiscretions get swept under the carpet. But then again, you wouldn't expect to be treated the same with you being a taxi driver, as the law only applies to you and not to them.

The man got a two year driving ban. The five year ban is Oldham's interpretation of the rehabilitation period. There is nothing to stop this person applying for a license anywhere in the country after his driving ban has expired but I suspect he might come up against the same brick wall put up by Oldham as most councils stick to the guide lines of rehabilitation.
