POUNDS 400K IN CAR 'WAS TAXI CASH'

A TAXI firm boss who had almost pounds 400,000 in notes in his car said it was payment for his share in the company.

Peter Smith told a court he "wanted out" and business partner Scott Thompson had offered pounds 410,000 for his share.

Smith was stopped on May 18, 2006, by police during a money-laundering probe, the High Court in Glasgow heard.

Officers found pounds 389,035 in used notes in a suitcase in the dad-of two's jeep.

Smith, 39, said Thompson told him to meet another man behind a car showroom, where he would be given the cash.

Graham Robertson, defending, asked him:"Did it cross your mind that this could be the proceeds of criminal activity?"

Smith replied: "No, because I know the kind of money that Scott earns. I was confident that he was an honest person."

Smith, of Old Castle Road, Cathcart, Glasgow, denies helping to launder money.

He also denies having pounds 49,270 of "criminal property".

The trial continues.

There are two things I seldom comment on in relation to the UK taxi/PH trade. One is the Glasgow PH radio circuits, and the other is the Northern Ireland taxi/PH situation.

Paisley, a town with the population of about 72,000, has only one private hire company (Paisley Cab Co) which has now 'merged' with the neighbouring town of Renfrew biggest company (Clyde One Cars).

While there is still competition in Paisley's neighbouring towns ie. Johnstone, Linwood, Renfrew & Erskine I challenge anyone to open a private hire company in Paisley

You never know, I hear there are a lot of Eastern European gangsters moving into your neck of the woods. They just might have the balls to try and pull it off.

Are they still throwing the bodies in the clyde?
