Taxi fare hike gets OK despite drivers' protests

MANSFIELD council chiefs have given the go-ahead for a massive hike in taxi fares — despite protests from drivers.

Licensing bosses say the cost of travelling the first half mile in a taxi after 11.30pm will rise from £1.90 to £3 — the same price customers currently pay during the festive period.
Among other increases is a rise in Christmas and New Year rates from £2.40 to £3.50 for the first half mile and a more moderate rise in the daytime from £1.70 to £2.
The new fares were agreed at a Mansfield District Council Licensing Committee on Thursday after a working party of councillors recommended the new rates.
The council now has to take on board any objections to the rises before making a final decision, with the increase expected to come into effect in October.
Taxi trade leaders and officials from the TGWU drivers' union had called for more moderate price rises, fearing the public may feel the fares are too steep and refuse to pay.
But the council says Mansfield has some of the lowest taxi fares in the country and the rises are needed to help encourage more drivers to work into the early hours and solve a taxi shortage.
Chairman Coun Andre Camilleri admitted the increases might not be universally popular, but said: "We are trying to give these people a decent living to get them out working at night. We want good taxi drivers on the streets earning a good living. I don't understand why we have had such opposition from the union."
After the meeting, union shop steward Glen Borrill insisited large increases could put his members off working at night as they fear more abuse and violence from customers who blame them for the fare rise.
And he revealed that angry drivers will continue to protest about the price hike.
"The next line of attack will be to try and organise an objection campaign. We feel we will get the backing of the public in that as well," he said.

Why do you have drivers moaning in some areas that the fares are too much, and in others that they are too little.

Maybe the answer is to do what every other business does, and that's set your own.

If it all goes as normal, then customers will moan for a few weeks and then forget about it.

If we fixed our fares to suit customers then we would be doing it for nothing. During the day it's a little different. But at night a higher rate is a must.

Staff working at night sometimes get double pay, or at least a large % increase. So really we should too.

For goodness sake, you would think that the rise asked was a massive one.
Get real the trade has been overworked(hour wise)and under paid for years.
And for the Union to complain,it shows you they are way behind the times.
Wonder if Joe Public would put up with the hours required for us to make a decent wage.
As post mentioned, the public will get used to the increase within a few weeks.
Also it is up to the individual,if you do not want to pay the fare, make alternative arrangements.

well on those facts it demonstrated 2 things

1, the majority of taxi drivers in Mansfield want the increase

2 the council are trying to solve a problem

3 it gives an opportunity to up the drivers earnings.

I think the council are adopting a very fine 'Managed Growth' policy in terms of the fares.

it is clear from what Nige has said himself that 2 things are on the councils mind

1 they would like buses to run, but they wont without subsidy.

2 The council feel there is enough taxis but not enough drivers, so they are widening the driver qualifications, hence Nigel posting on this site would you license this one? and making it more financialy beneficial.

I have said on here b4 if a council has a problem solve it, or the council will.

and at the moment they percive a shortage of taxis and drivers.

rise to the challenge Nige.
