CABBIE DOLE FEAR

TAXI drivers around the country could be on the dole in six months if the number of licences issued is not capped, it has been warned.

Martin White, of the Clare Irish Taxi Drivers Federation, believes the Government should intervene now and has called on incoming Taoiseach Brian Cowen to see sense and regularise the industry before it is too late. He said: "The work just isn't there any more and people are already packing it in.

"It was the Government who deregulated the industry and it is the Government who should admit they got it wrong.

"If something isn't done drivers will be on the dole within six months."
