A good story to end on but it Seems like we've been here before and Liverpool will no more license the E7 than Mr T will show his backside on the pier head. lol

Liverpool Daily Echo

March 27, 2008, Thursday

A roll-on roll-off taxi ride;

A NEW style taxi - especially suited for wheelchair users - could soon be on Liverpool streets if councillors give the go ahead tomorrow.

The Peugeot E7 cabs are already being hailed a success in Wirral and many UK cities.

John Bruce, chairman of Liverpool Wheelchair Users Group, is firmly behind the move.

"We believe the new taxi would make a huge difference to the city's 12,000 wheelchair-users," he said.

"While the traditional black cabs are accessible for lots of people with mobility problems, they are not perfect for everyone. Alarge number of wheelchair-users have difficulties using them. Some people have simply stopped going out.

"In the current black cabs it is not easy to turn your wheelchair into a safe and secure position for travel. The result is that most wheelchair-users travel sideways, unsecured for short journeys."

The newE7 taxi has high quality wheelchair restraints and full lap and diagonal seatbelts.

There is also a pull-out ramp.

Giving the go-ahead seems like an open and shut case for the city's licensing committee.

But, it seems, it is not.

Concerns have been raised about the vehicle's bigger turning circle requirements, which could cause congestion problems, and its sliding doors, which Merseyside police say are more difficult to open and close.

I hope these issues don't block the proposal.

Watch this space...

The meeting was last Friday........ and it was knocked back........ this is the third time before council................ I should imagine it will be quite a while before they allow it to be represented............... that is unless somebody takes it to court..

You would have thought Cab Direct would be leading the way in court action.

But they seem quite happy to watch and wait.

Some cruel folks would call them a gutless bunch.

All this person has to do now is sue the police under the disability discrimination act, I am sure the police will soon change there minds

If it is always the turning circle why don't the people that design cars to be used as taxis design them so that they will meet the turning circle? It can't be rocket science.

If it were that easy, why do LTI still use pretty much the same steering system as 50 years ago?
Somebody told me once it comes from a Thames Trader. Not sure how true that is, before my time.

God knows how many cabs I have had smashed up because the driver was doing a U-turn and ended up with a car in the driver's door...... to be honest I used to alter the steering so that they couldn't do U- turns in the end.

Simple, costs.

It would price the vehicle out of the market.

Also most vehicles are designed for the European market, not just a few nostalgic backwaters in the UK where they still believe there is an empire.

Sorry I don't buy that reason. When the vehicle is at the design stage, it costs no more to have the turning circle whatever you want it to be.
