Ordinarily fare increases are not that news worthy unless there is an added element but what we are seeing now is that the number of fare increase applications seems to be rising and the main reason is the increase in fuel costs. We all know that there seems to be no end to the spiralling costs of fuel which begs the question how long before drivers of mandatory LTI and high fuel consumption vehicles decide enough is enough and campaign for a wider choice of taxi vehicle? _______________________________ May 31, 2008 Saturday Rise in prices triggers taxi plea for 30p extra Andover Advertiser THE increase in fuel prices has prompted Test Valley taxis to ask for a fare increase of 30p a mile. Hackney carriages in the area may legally charge no more than the maximum fare set by Test Valley Borough Council - private hire vehicles can charge any fare they wish. In a statement to the council's licensing committee Mrs Irene Bell, chairwoman of the Test Valley Taxi Association, said: "Due to the continuing rise in fuel prices we feel that we must now request a fare increase." Most owners voted to increase the mileage by 30p a mile and leave the flag rate and all other charges the same. Members of the licensing committee will discuss the request at a meeting on Thursday. The committee will hear the fares were last increased nearly two years ago and licensing officer Michael White is recommending that the increase be granted. He says: "It is now nearly two years since the last increase and, as the increase requested is not excessive in comparison to other fares in the area, it is recommended that the request be granted." If granted it would mean the basic fare for the first two miles rising from £4.50p to £4.80p. ____________________ |

Surely a 30p per mile increase would mean a £4:50 fare for a two mile journey would increase by 60p, to £5:10? |
