Young Woman Raped by Private Hire Taxi Driver in Edinburgh 22nd August 2008 A young woman was raped by the driver of what she thought was a private hire taxi in a "terrifying ordeal", police said today. The 26-year-old woman got into the vehicle after leaving the Hudson Hotel on Hope Street in the west end of Edinburgh. She was driven from there to Brunstane Road South, where the man is believed to have assaulted her within the car. Police appealed for information about the incident which happened in the early hours of Sunday morning. A police spokesman said: "This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim, who is understandably traumatised by what has happened. "We would like to speak anyone who was in the area of the Hudson Hotel in Hope Street and saw the victim get into a car with the driver at around 2.15am, or who saw her being pulled out of a car in Brunstane Road South in the early hours of Sunday morning." They urged anyone with information which could help them trace the suspect to contact them. He is described as black, 5ft 8in, around 30-years-old, with short black hair, and wearing a red t-shirt and jeans. Police reminded people that all genuine taxi drivers carry identification, and private hire cabs should not stop to collect people without them receiving a prior booking. They advised people not to enter a vehicle if they are suspicious about its legitimacy, and instead to contact the police. Source; The Herald, Scotland. ALSO Bogus Cab Driver Sought Over Rape 22nd August 2008 Police are hunting a possible bogus taxi driver who subjected a 26-year-old woman to a serious sexual assault. The incident happened at about 0215 BST on Sunday when the victim had left the Hudson Hotel, Hope Street, Edinburgh. Police said the woman entered what she believed to be a private hire taxi but was driven to Brunstane Road South, where she was allegedly assaulted. The suspect is described as black, about 5ft 8ins tall, aged about 30 and with short black hair. He was wearing a red T-shirt and jeans. A Lothian and Borders police spokesman said: "This was a terrifying ordeal for the victim, who is understandably traumatised by what has happened. "We would like to speak anyone who was in the area of the Hudson Hotel in Hope Street and saw the victim get into a car with the driver or who saw her being pulled out of a car in Brunstane Road South in the early hours of Sunday morning." The spokesman added: "We would like to take this opportunity to remind people that all genuine taxi drivers carry identification, and private hire cabs should not stop to collect people without them receiving a prior booking." If they could provide a description of make of car and colour drivers in Edinburgh could keep an eye out for him. I wonder if the police could use TDO for posting information of crimes or missing persons I dont think there would be many of the ass-wipes coming on TDO to find out if the police are looking for them Alex could provide them with there own section |

But do you think that would spur the police on to smarter enforcement? |

nine times out of ten it is a chancer posing as a taxi driver committing crimes like this but it is always the trade that gets the blame by association so if the trade does get involved in caatching these perverts then it can only serve as a good indicator of the integrity of the majority of drivers |

Ha lo alo alo . Perhaps if the PH trade stop acting like unlicensed mini cabs, then the Public would be able to tell who was a pukka ph driver or not. If these women Phoned for a PHV like they are supposed to or only flagged down a Hackney carriage driver in a proper taxi, there would be little or no chance of then being attacked. Evening all. PS, we should not worry if plod comes on here, we got nothing to hide. |

Could this be a case of no signage causing this nasty incident?
From memory Edinburgh PH have only just got plates.
Or is this a case of the lady who always gets into unmarked licensed vehicles, suddenly getting into an unmarked unlicensed vehicle?

Signage shouldn't matter one iota. Phone for a PHV and get a reg number. Black cabs in London never had signage for over fifty years. It was only the greedy proprietors that let this unsightly mess proliferate. adverts and company names look messy and cheap. Or is this a case of the lady who always gets into unmarked licensed vehicles, suddenly getting into an unmarked unlicensed vehicle? If see phones she gets the right vehicle. |

Phone for a PHV and get a reg number. And all customer late at night are going to write down the correct details?
If all PH in Edinburgh had bundles of signage this lady, if she did, would never have got into an unmarked vehicle. |

Why do PH get so much Stick...if she jumped into a Vehicle thinking it was PH she mustve booked it before hand....more likely she got into what she thought was an HC stopped at the roadside. So in the PH versus HC argument both are just as likely to fall foul of this kind sicko's pick up trick as the other is. Sober or Drunk it was a Mistake by this lady. Anyone determined enough to Pick up an Innocent victim to abuse is im sure quite Capable of and Intellegent enough to buy or steal a Taxi roof sign to further his perverted pursuit. so please lay off us PH guys. 99.9 percent of us are decent guys trying to earn a crust to feed the family just like HC guys are. Ive never Phlimped, Hawked, Loitered, Plied for illegal business....Nor I guess have the Vast majority of PH drivers. its a Hardcore minority of PH, Maybe even Unlicenced Boy racers or chancers that you want to vent your spleen at. so please..give us Chaps a break. |
