Taxi drivers fume over tariff changes

TAXI drivers have been left fuming after unpopular plans to change the fare tariff were approved.

The majority of Hackney carriage drivers are opposed to plans to revise the format of the fare tariff card, which determines how much people pay for using taxis.

The current tariff card has rates for peak and off peak journeys, rates for ChristmasADVERTISEMENTand New Year in addition to extra charges for more passengers, luggage, pets and people who foul vehicles.

Earlier this year around 90 Hackney carriage proprietors were asked to consider various proposals in a ballot.

Only six per cent voted in favour of the option, which was eventually passed by the committee which would see an increase in general rates with no extras.

The drivers say the change in format would undoubtedly penalise a large proportion of Eastbourne's taxi travelling public as well as the taxi drivers themselves.

Tempers flared when the decision was made by members of Eastbourne Borough Council's licensing committee on Wednesday evening.

The committee has given the drivers eight weeks to come up with a tariff card they can all agree on.

A spokesperson for the council said on Thursday morning the committee had agreed to revise the format of the council's fare tariff card to make it easier for the public to understand.

"The committee removed the 'extras' system currently in place citing the system was confusing and too complex for the public to understand.

Members agreed to further consult with the Hackney carriage trade as to the levels at which the differing rates should be set and will re- convene to consider the feedback before setting the fare levels."

Barry Morris, chairman of 720 Taxis who was at the meeting, said, "We are all astounded that the proposal with only minimal support was passed by Eastbourne's councillors.

"Eastbourne offers one of the highest level of taxi services in the country regularly commented on by both locals and holidaymakers. How can Eastbourne's councillors possibly head towards a decision that will affect this high level of service?"
