Three diehard Motherwell fans have forked out £1,600 on a taxi to a match — in FRANCE.
The cab will take Allison Campbell and sisters Carol and Anne Hunter the 1,680 miles to and from their team’ s UEFA Cup game against French side Nancy.
They were forced to splash out when flight prices rocketed as more than 3,000 Motherwell supporters battled for seats.
Driver Donald Campbell thought the trio were joking when they asked for a lift across the Channel. But the cabbie — who runs the Donald Campbell Executive Hire firm — said: “In the end I was happy to help three damsels in distress who were just desperate to get to the game.
“It’s definitely the weirdest hire I’ve ever had.”
The women leave on Wednesday lunchtime and will take the ferry from Hull to Zeebrugge before returning on Saturday after Thursday night’s match.
Civil servant Ann, 45, from the Lanarkshire town, said: “He’s quoted us a fare of around £1,600 but we won’t know the exact cost till the metre starts running. We made the mistake of not booking flights until we knew we had tickets to the game. By that time flights had soared to £400.
“It’s only an extra £100 each to get a taxi.
“We go straight to the ground and don’t have to worry about missing early morning flights.”
Delighted pal Allison, 43, added: “When Motherwell qualified I was so hungry to get over and see them. I was so glad when Ann worked out we could travel in style in a taxi.”
