Torridge Taxi Survey

17th September 2008

A study of the hackney carriage market in Torridge says there is no evidence of significant unmet demand.

Members of the licensing committee tomorrow (Thursday) will be recommended to maintain the present limit of 49 hackney carriage licences and that the policy of quantity control be reviewed again in three years' time or earlier if required.

A total of 446 face-to-face interviews were carried out to assess levels of public satisfaction with the service.

Satisfaction with the delay on the last trip taken ranged from 86 per cent by flag down customers to 93 per cent on those using a taxi rank.

Eighty-eight per cent of respondents thought the condition of taxis was either good or very good, but 69.7 per cent wanted cheaper fares.

A similar questionnaire was sent to 112 licensed hackney carriage and private hire drivers, of which only 32 were returned.
Of these, 40 per cent thought fares were too low, but 44 per cent thought they were about right.

Most drivers who responded - 92 per cent - said quantity controls should not be removed.

No I haven't, & don't need to.

Their full list of licensed drivers & vehicles, including registration numbers & the horse-drawn Hackney Carriages, called Landaus in Blackpool, is all available on-line.

That's when the licence comes into force, starts from, or commences.
