Taxi Review Will Shake Up Dales Service

18th September 2008

Taxis in the Dales are being reviewed in a bid to shake up the service.

Drivers and residents are being asked for their views on the current service by Derbyshire Dales District Council. It wants to know what they think about the location of taxi stands and whether enough cars are provided in the right areas.

Owner of Matlock Taxis, Brian Masters, has been in business for 30 years and said he felt an enforcement officer at ranks would help.

He said: "The present day operators don't seem to want to work in unison. It is every man for himself."

Fred Garside from Cross Dales Taxi Service said drivers not using the official rank were a problem.

He said: "I would welcome anything that would make a system so that those of us who abide by the law are not penalised."

The district council will present a report later this year. Chairman of the committee responsible, Carol Valentine said: "The aim of the review is to improve the standard and safety of the service provided for the residents of Derbyshire Dales.

"We have had a good response from drivers and operators and some very positive feedback and support for the review. We are aiming to introduce the new policy in April 2009."

Residents are invited to submit their views by writing to Ken Crow, Elections Manager, Derbyshire Dales District Council, Town Hall, Bank Road, Matlock, Derbyshire DE4 3NN.
