On Tuesday, I was driving into Birmingham City Centre, when ...

... I saw in front of me a 7.5 tonne size TNT delivery wagon. On the rear roller shutter doors the following logo had been sign-written;

Zero Emission Electric Vehicle

Traffic soon snarled up to a stand-still, & there was just enough room for me to squeeze in along the off-side of the TNT wagon, so that I could have a chat with the driver.

I lowered my near-side window & blew my horn to attract the TNT driver's attention, & it happen to be a lady driver, who responded, by lowering her window & we had a chat.

I asked; (a really stupid first question).

"Is that really an all electric vehicle?" (Just to make sure, like!! Duuuuurrrhhhh!)

And then the lady driver replied, "Yes, £70,000 & the four batteries cost £38,000."

"How many miles on a single charge?" I asked.

The lady replied, "About a hundred. It's only 1000 kilo, because the batteries run out much quicker if the load is any more."

Then the traffic started to move & the conversation finished.

So, how long will it be before the cab trade is forced into having electric taxis, with their inherent expense?

environmentaly friendly my Ar*e.

If we use the same ratio that a 7.5 ton electric truck can only carry 1000kg then that woud equate to a 4 passenger seat vehicle being only able to carry two legs and part of a lower Torso....hardly bloody practical now is it?????

In my very early days in the cab trade, when I was still green, I once asked the driver of a milk float for a jump start.

It melted my almost new £60 jump leads & blew the tops of my battery cells straight off. And wrecked my battery.

Cab battery = 12 volts versus milk float battery = 24 volts.

A Motorola portable phone cost about £400 and weighed a tonne back in 1986 . . . and now?

Give the electric folks a few years and I'm certain there will come a stage where the technology will be in place, and the system will cost less than the current diesel engine.
