Post subject:  TX4 STOPS; INDEX OF ALL AREA STOPS

I have started this thread as I believe it would be a good idea if all areas in which stops have been placed on TX4 cabs were catalogued somewhere on TDO, because the way things are going with this catastrophe it may well help all areas to an eventual co-odinated action against those that may become accountable. Others may not agree, but those are my views. So the first story in this index is;

Plymouth;

Taxis Ordered Off The Streets

24th September 2008

Two black cabs have been ordered off Plymouth's streets amid fears they could suddenly burst into flames.

It follows eight instances of Hackney cabs spontaneously combusting in London, and a further 11 around the country.

The vehicles affected are all two-year-old TX4-type cabs with a 56 registration.

In the capital, 500 were ordered off the streets following the most recent fire last week.

Plymouth City Council has identified two such vehicles in the city and is taking no chances.

"We have asked for both vehicles to be taken off the road pending an investigation by the manufacturer," a spokeswoman said.
"They have to contact the manufacturer."

In London, the sudden engine fires all occurred during the past three months.

There have been no reported injuries but the cause of the fires remains a mystery.

This prompted Transport for London (TfL) to haul them off the road.

They must now pass a safety inspection by manufacturers LTI before being allowed back into service.

TfL has said the safety of taxi drivers and passengers was its main concern.

It had already ordered all TX4s, with a 56 registration, to undergo safety checks before the latest blaze.

But after that the vehicles were completely withdrawn pending assessments by Coventry-based LTI.

TfL said this was to 'minimise the risks to both drivers and passengers'.
It said: "This isn't a step we have taken lightly and we know it will be a blow for taxi drivers.

"Although nobody has been hurt to date, we just can't take any chances with the lives of taxi drivers, passengers and other road users."

LTI has issued advice to all taxi drivers in the event of 'smoke or unusual noises originating in the engine compartment of any cab',

The company says they should stop the vehicle, get themselves and any passengers away from the cab and call the fire service.

Only a small percentage of black cabs are affected. London has about 21,000 black cabs overall and even Plymouth has just over 360.

Redbridge;

Cabbies Say 'timebomb taxis' Should Be Recalled

25th September 2008

Worried black cab drivers fear they could be sitting on ‘ticking timebombs’ after nearly a dozen of the iconic vehicles mysteriously burst into flames.

More than 600 cabs have been recalled for urgent safety checks by manufacturers, London Taxis International (LTI), after eleven of its TX4 models caught fire in separate incidents around the country.

Dozens of cabbies in Redbridge have had their licences suspended and told to have their taxis immediately inspected for faults, after the firm recalled all TX4s with a ‘56’ numberplate – sold in September 2006.

Cabbie Colin Salmon, of Brunswick Gardens in Clayhall, believes the company will have to carry out a complete recall of all the TX4s it has ever sold before taxi drivers and passengers can feel completely confident of their safety.

He said: “They’ve recalled one lot of these cabs, but why should they be any different to any of the other TX4s sold in different months or years?

“They’re all wired up the same aren’t they? They’re all potentially ticking timebombs.”

“There’s obviously some kind of problem with them, and they will surely have to take a look at them all to make sure they’re OK.”

“I used to have one of the TX4s with a 56 plate, and it had all sorts of problems, so I got rid of it and bought a new Mercedes cab instead.

“It’s been running great, and I’m really glad I made the switch now.”

His fears were echoed by fellow driver Kevin Vyner, who said many drivers in the borough, which has the largest population of cabbies in London, were deeply concerned about the unexplained blazes.

But cabbie Mark Thurbin, of Malborough Road in Clayhall, said people should not to panic about the problem.

He said: “These fires have only affected a tiny percentage of cabs so people should not feel unsafe about using one. The big majority of black cabs are really safe.

“I drive a TX2 myself, but I have friends who drive the TX4, which is a newer model, and lots of them have had teething problems.

“I hope LTI does some work to improve its aftersales service after this.”

A spokesman for LTI said: “We would like to reassure drivers that driver and passenger safety will always be a priority for LTI and we are working closely alongside the Public Carriage Office at this time to solve this issue. LTI remain committed to finding the cause of this problem and a speedy effective solution.”

That's the kind of 'Roll Call' I was trying to establish on this thread.

But guess what?

Do you think Birmingham have done anything about this yet?

Not so far!!!

Since Tuesday I have been sounding out prominent legal firms with a view to organising a class action once the problem with these vehicles has been identified. I haven't yet discussed the prooposals with my colleagues which would amount to bringing all affected individual owners together by way of TDO acting as a conduit.

There are many inponderables and in order to succeed as a class action practically everyone who is not represented by an organisation that is minded to act on their behalf would have to join the action. The cost of such an action would fall on those who are a party but no action can be started until all the facts are on the table and fault has been established.

There will no doubt be many owners in the Uk who will feel isolated and wondering what they can do to retrieve the situation in respect of their financial losses? It is these people who will need the strength of numbers to get what they are entitled to and not what LTI think they are entitled to?

There is also the added problem of what options are available to owners under consumer legislation once the fault has been diagnosed?

It is imperitive that owners keep a record of all financial losses and it should be noted that those owners and drivers in areas that operate quantity controls will not be able go out and hire another vehicle, as is the case in London.

I'll ask my colleagues if it is feesable to put up a standard notice as a sticky, whereby all those affected could contact TDO and register themselves as an interested party to any future litigation against those responsible for this situation?

It the action was to go ahead then the services in this particular instance would not be for free and any costs incured by TDO acting as agents would be recovered in the usual way.

JD

It would help if we could find out how many have been sold so far, and not just the affect one's, this would give an indication of the levels of compensation we are looking at

Dear All Night,

Thanks for your e-mail on the problems of 56 registered TX4's. We only have about 6 TX4's in the Aberdeen fleet. I have asked Ray to check our records to see how many in the relevant category we have. If we have any, the Taxi Inspector will require the plate holders to present their vehicle for immediate inspection. Failure to present the vehicle would most probably result in our suspending the taxi licence immediately.
